This capability makes Shepherd one of the leading suppliers of this metal in chemical applications. Our ability to safely handle Cr 6+ raw materials and convert to trivalent chromium compounds, sets us apart from other metal chemistry suppliers throughout the world.
Chromium is generally mined as Chromite Ore and processed to Ferrochrome for steel making or chromium chemicals for a range of industrial uses. It is used to enhance other metals in plating applications or in aluminum anodizing, and commonly used in coating cars and appliances to protect them from corrosion. As a catalyst component, chromium compounds are well known for use in polyolefin manufacture, as well as crosslinking catalysts in adhesive formulations and as an epoxy hardener.
Chromium is a hard metal known for its silver, shiny “polished” appearance. It has a high melting point and a stable crystalline structure. When combined with other elements it makes vibrant colors (hence the origin of its name, “chroma”) and is used in dye making for the textile and refractory industries.
