Cerium Nitrate solution is used as a catalyst for hydrolysis of phosphoric acid esters. Supporting many innovative applications, Cerium Octoate is used in Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), as an additive in organic formulas to create the well-known brand name Teflon™, a non-stick coating found in cookware and cooking utensils. It is even found on coatings inside self-cleaning ovens to prevent food build-up.
Cerium can enhance the photostability of pigments and is a valuable component in staining glass. It is also used in making flat-screen TVs, low energy fluorescent lamps, and diesel fuel.
Cerium is a silvery grey lustrous metal that is malleable—it is soft enough to be cut with a knife, and tarnishes when exposed to air. It will spark a flame if you strike it. It is one of the most reactive of the rare-earth metals, also called Lanthanides.
